The great adventure leading up to the hunt
By: Ayden Walker
In the beginning of the summer my mom and I started to build the stand at my papa’s cabin. We pulled all our tools, food and water back on sleds and picked out a group of trees right next to my papa’s old tree stand. I got to use the saw to cut down little trees and then use a little hatchet and cut branches. We worked all day on the stand and then went home. We went up to papa’s cabin a lot all summer long to work on the stand. We used super long bolts to attach the trees we cut to three trees that we picked out to make a triangle. After we attached the logs to the trees, we cut trees for shooting lanes and to make the floor of the stand. We laid the small trees across the big trees and then used rope to tie them down. I nailed down scrap pieces of old boards to have a nice floor to put my chair on.
On the way home from the cabin one day we stopped at Fleet Farm and my mom let me pick out a knife for all my hard work. I used the knife to cut the rope for the deer stand and then I could use it to gut a deer too. After we finished the deer stand, we hung up a trail camera and went home. We made a ladder at home for the tree stand and then carried it out. We put hooks underneath to hang the ladder so it doesn’t sit out in the rain and snow. The day before hunting we walked back and took the camera to see if any animals walked by. There were three bucks, and some does on the camera and one of them licked the camera!
Opening day we woke up really early and walked out to our stand that we call the castle. We sat very quiet and when the sun came up there was a snowy owl sitting in a tree by us. We took pictures of it and watched it for a long time until it flew away. We sat and waited for deer until lunch and then we walked back to the cabin to eat. We sat out in the woods again until close and we didn’t see any deer. The next day we went out again and still didn’t see any deer. After two days of hunting we had to go home. A couple days later we went hunting at home in our woods. We sat in a ground blind and saw two does on the other side of the hay field. Mom said they were too far to shoot so we watched them walk closer and eat grass until close when we had to go back to the house. On the way back to the house we were walking on the path and all of a sudden there was a loud noise and I saw a huge brown animal jump up. It scared both of us and then we saw it was a turkey that was in the tall grass and jumped up when we walked past it and flew up into a tree! We laughed so hard because we didn’t see it. The next day we went out hunting again and saw three does in the neighbor’s hay field. We watched them the whole time and they never came into our field so we couldn’t shoot them. Even though we didn’t get a deer I had a lot of fun. I can’t wait until I can hunt on my own. I carried my BB gun this year to practice being safe with a gun while walking through the woods and getting into the stand. This summer I will practice shooting a big enough gun to shoot a deer and if I am ready, then I will hopefully kill a deer next year. As soon as I get stronger to pull back a bow that can kill a deer, I will bow hunt.
